Cesarian Sections and Normal Delivery

At Mississippi Animal Hospital, we provide optimal care for your pregnant pet. We are very experienced with performing C-sections, which can be done as an emergency procedure or an elective procedure. Usually the delivery process is very smooth; however, there may be things that complicate a normal delivery and require and emergency C-section. Some complications that may occur in the mother include: a narrow or obstructed birth canal, uterine rupture, uterine inertia, maternal diabetes or infections and illnesses. In addition some fetal problems may necessitate an emergency C-section such as an oversized puppy, a tangled puppy in the birth canal or a deformed puppy. There may be other signs indicating the need for an emergency delivery such as maternal distress, increase in heart rate or a prolonged period between delivering puppies.

Our fully equipped operation room has state-of-art medical devices that will put your pet to sleep safely, monitor heart and respiratory rates, administer general anesthetic drug, to ensure the safety and comfort of the mother and the newborn. After surgery, we carefully monitor the mother in order to make sure she is regaining her health quickly and the babies to make sure they are healthy and are adequately adjusting to life outside of the womb. During the recovery phase, we closely monitor the mother, so that she does not fall off and hurt herself, nor roll over and crush her babies. We also make sure that the puppies don’t leave our medical facility until they can rely on their mother for adequate nurture. C-sections, when indicated, are essential for the survival of both the mother and her babies.
